From the Mats to Marketing
I’m Stepan Gormuzov, and martial arts has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Born in Russia and growing up in Amsterdam, I trained in judo as a child, boxing as a teenager, and, for the past two years, Muay Thai. Martial arts has taught me resilience, discipline, and the value of community, lessons I carry into everything I do.
Unfortunately, a herniated disc has slowed down how much I can train. But it’s also given me the time and perspective to focus on another passion of mine: helping martial arts gyms thrive through smarter, more effective marketing.
Finding My Path
For years, I felt stuck in what I call the “grey life” in the Netherlands—where people just seem to go through the motions. I dreamed of building a career where I could work from my laptop, travel the world, and feel proud of the impact I was making. But getting there wasn’t straightforward.
I tried everything: cryptocurrency, dropshipping, NFTs. None of it clicked. Then I discovered marketing, and for the first time, I found something that felt natural to me. I liked it—and I was good at it.
But at first I started working with driving schools, and that didn’t exactly inspire me. That’s when I realized that just “doing marketing” wasn’t enough. I needed to combine it with something I cared about.
The Aha Moment
One day, while training at my gym in Amsterdam, it hit me: Why not focus on martial arts gyms? I was already spending so much time in them and had a solid understanding of how they worked. I started noticing ways their marketing could be better—how small improvements could make a big impact.
That’s when it all clicked. Martial arts gyms were my niche. Combining my passion for training with my marketing skills wasn’t just a career move—it gave me a purpose I could truly be proud of.
